Supporting Diversity in Science
The ESWN Board in November 2016, I am the one standing on the far right.
Through early experiences in my career, I realized there were many unwritten rules in the scientific community. These rules were created during a time when only certain people were allowed to be scientists and still often benefit those in the field with identities that have long been accepted.
It was through this personal realization and a desire to create a community with other female scientists, that I became a founding member and the first President of the Earth Science Women’s Network. ESWN. While it is now a 501(c)(3) non-profit, ESWN began as a community that allowed women in the scientific field to network and connect with others. After all of these years and the immense growth of EWSN, the mission of ESWN has expanded towards increasing diversity in the geoscience and Earth science fields. While I no longer serve as the President of ESWN, the values I helped found it upon maintain a priority of mine.
Through my work at UW-Madison and my group in the Nelson Institute Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE), I focus on encouraging people of all backgrounds to apply and hope to foster a love for science in all people. If you are interested in learning more in-depth about my background in supporting diversity in science, feel free to check out my interview on the Propelling Women in Power Podcast where I discuss the issue of underrepresentation of women in STEM fields.
