Connecting The Dots
Air pollution is the leading global environmental health risk. Energy systems significantly affect in air quality, and play a crucial role in climate change. By using air quality to connect the dots, we find win-win solutions that simultaneously benefit energy, health, climate, all while improving the air we breathe. Over the past 20-years, our work has informed policymakers, businesses, and state and federal agencies.
We have extensive experience using satellite data and in-depth modeling to analyze air quality and health outcomes. Pick an area of expertise to learn about specific projects or browse more of our ongoing and completed work below.
Current Projects
Funded by NASA
The Holloway Group leads and contributes to the national NASA team conducting applied research and outreach to link advanced data and tools with air quality and health.
Funded by NASA and the McKnight Foundation
The Holloway Group investigates the environmental justice dimensions of air pollution.
Funded by Earthjustice and NIH
The Holloway Group works to characterize multi-pollutant emission changes and conduct cost-benefit analysis to provide information on “win-win” air pollution control, climate mitigation, and health outcomes.
Funded by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)
The Holloway Group will develop a computationally feasible method to assess air pollution exposure near LNG terminals and related industrial facilities.
Funded by NASA
The Holloway Group will apply satellite-derived fine particulate matter data to support air quality analysis in both counties with and without monitors, to better compare exposure between counties.
Funded by NASA
The Holloway Group will assess potential disparities in exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) utilizing Madison’s new low-cost sensor network.
Funded by the Wisconsin Office of Sustainability and Clean Energy
The Holloway Group will assist the Office of Sustainability Clean Energy in developing Wisconsin’s Priority Climate Action Plans (PCAPs) and Comprehensive Climate Action Plans (CCAPs).
Funded by CAELP & Audi Settlement Fund
The Holloway Group works to examine regulatory modeling guidances for sulfur dioxide, with an eye toward alternate criteria to improve assessment away from monitors.
Funded by Donor Generosity
The Holloway Group uses the Roblox platform to develop a “metaverse” environment to support outreach, education, and science communication.
Past Projects
Funded by the Joyce Foundation and the McKnight Foundation
The Holloway Group works with state-level non-profits to quantify the air quality and health impacts from potential climate, energy, and transportation policies.
Funded by the EPA
Holloway Group members collaborate with Prof. Tim Bertram (UW–Madison Chemistry) to integrate new chemical processes into the EPA Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ)
Funded by NASA & Audi Settlement Fund
The Holloway Group works to address the potential for satellite data to support energy decision-making around supply, demand, and environmental impacts.
